The Dangers of Being Addicted to Online Novels

I'm writing this mainly to repent for the fact that I once sold morally questionable writings for money, and I can't delete them since the copyright belongs to the website. I'm ashamed, and I hope this article can lessen my guilt.

I first encountered online novels in my first year of junior high school. While browsing the internet, I came across a time-travel story and was completely captivated. Because the female lead was a forensic doctor, and I admired her elegance and erudition, I searched for videos, books, and knowledge about forensic medicine. After that, I frequented online libraries like BioValley, SuperStar Library, and Digital Library. Because I liked the protagonist's refined style of reciting poetry, I started memorizing a lot of classical poems. Chinese, which I hated the most, became a part of my life, and I became a little prodigy at school. Because the protagonist was proficient in the works of various schools of thought and the Book of Changes, I also had the opportunity to learn about these valuable treasures. Although I was somewhat confused about Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist classics, they nourished me greatly during my turbulent adolescence, making me more mature and clear-headed amidst my naivety. In the clash of Eastern and Western cultures, I developed a good habit of thoughtful reflection and self-judgment.

Even now, I can't shake my habit of extensive reading and searching. I change my mind constantly. Then I heard a lecture that said keeping an open mind is a good thing, and without realizing it, my horizons broadened. I became involved with searching. The world is changing so fast; I desperately try to improve my learning ability, just wanting to avoid falling too far behind.

Some people who read online novels haven't gained anything good; instead, they've been severely harmed by them. Baidu: The impact of online novel addiction.

It can be seen that many people, due to addiction to online novels, have developed serious problems like lustful thoughts, neglecting their studies, fantasizing about romantic love and homosexuality, or at least becoming insecure, self-centered, unrealistic in their thinking, lacking ambition, and having a one-sided view of issues. They can't even last three months in a relationship, exhibiting authoritarianism and hierarchical thinking… all affecting their physical and mental health.

Many online novels take a borderline approach, featuring homosexuality, sibling relationships, extramarital affairs, abortion… harems, cheat codes, and supporting characters serving the protagonist. The more explicit and violent the plot, the more eye-catching it becomes. Indeed, many netizens read these morally questionable plots, and after reading them so much, they become accustomed to them and can accept anything.

Online novels are narratives of desire, and many authors lack aesthetic appeal, often resorting to life-and-death situations or severely lacking common sense. Their purpose is simply to provide lighthearted entertainment for young people, so don't take them too seriously.

Regarding these influences, I want to say that real life is a slippery slope where one wrong step can lead to complete ruin, not a smooth ride where everything goes perfectly.

Real life requires everyone to cooperate and maintain competitiveness, even in marital relationships, not a place where someone can be relied upon, pampered, and loved without any support.

In real life, promiscuous relationships are not only uncool but also condemned by many. Abortion or premarital pregnancy is not noble but rather immoral. Bigamy and having relations with minors are illegal, and cohabitation without legal or moral protection offers no protection. Being arrogant and cool is not as valuable as wisdom, gentleness, integrity, and optimism. A domineering CEO is not as adept as Jack Ma. Don't focus solely on appearances.

No one is your cannon fodder, no one is your supporting character, and no one is above anyone else. Everyone should act according to their own principles. Extreme emotional fluctuations are truly exhausting. It's best to maintain composure and avoid seeking thrills in relationships. Don't let improper romantic relationships lead to a life of poverty, emotional turmoil, and illness.

Some people know it's all fiction, yet they still become addicted, spending countless hours engrossed in novels, neglecting work and studies, cutting off communication, and wallowing in a self-righteous illusion of being aloof and unambitious, living a life of aimless drifting. Life is a dream, but we should still do our best to accomplish things, manage ourselves, care for our parents, and do good deeds within our capabilities.

The harm of online novel addiction isn't as severe as gambling, drugs, or pornography, but it's like slowly boiling a frog; it steals your willpower. Wake up! It's just a popular cultural product for leisure and entertainment; don't treat it as a source of spiritual sustenance.
